We walk for miles, taking occasional breaks until the camp appears in the distance. There’s smoke rising to the skies, and I swear I can smell the cooking spices from here. I missed home.

As soon as Kill’an crosses the entrance, three masters run up to him to give him updates. Our trip has officially ended, and duty pulls us apart. It’s a bittersweet feeling.

“See you tonight.” Comes Kill’an’s tight voice. He seems unhappy about our separation. I feel the same.

It’s strange not having handcuffs or a guard following me. Inside Kill’an’s tent, I set my sack on the floor. I don’t want to unpack my things in his home. It feels like I would be invading his space, even after our intimacy.

I grab a dress and a towel and walk to the shared baths. I use a bucket of water to bathe, scrubbing meticulously between my thighs where Kill’an left his mark. When I step out, I’m startled to find Kill’an standing there.

It’s like he sensed my sex is clean and is back to make a mess.

“Why didn’t you call for a bath in the tent?” he asks, his brow furrowed.

I shrug. “I didn’t want to bother anyone.”

“You don’t have to bathe out here anymore.”

I nod, although I’ll struggle with commanding masters to bring things to me. For months, I’ve been the servant. Not the other way around.

“I spoke with the investigator,” Kill’an says.

I push a lock of wet hair behind my ear and tug at my dress. This is the moment we waited weeks for.

“He found nothing suspicious in your documents or records of you in the royal criminal archives. Your name has been cleared.”

I cross my arms. “So I’m not a spy. I told you so.”

“I never truly suspected you. Like a child, you can barely walk straight up a mountain without getting distracted by flowers and rocks.”

“Hey!”

He laughs and steps closer, gripping my chin. He rubs his nose against mine. His skin texture is rougher, the bridge of his nose sharper, but there is only tenderness in the motion.

“I would say I’m sorry for making you my captive for weeks, but then I would make myself a liar. This is the best mistake I’ve ever made because I got you. I regret nothing.”

He looks at me so warmly that I heat from head to toe.

He bends his massive form to kiss my forehead. “I’ll see you tonight.”

As he walks away, my eyes follow those broad shoulders, craving to climb them.

“Do you think he would have handcuffed me if he knew I was the one that set his tent on fire?”

Jadah’s voice surprises me. I turn to face her, confused by the peculiar question. “Hey, Jadah,” I smile. “I doubt it. I was the idiot caught with a hand in his tent.”

She smiles back, although I notice it doesn’t meet her eyes. “I thank the Gods for having you back safely. Did everything go well?”

“Yes. But…Kill’an and I—”

She looks behind her. “You shouldn’t use his name, A’ria. It’s informal.
